The first time I saw « Stand By Me », it left me with a weird and wonderful feeling. I laughed at the funny moments, felt sad at the most serious parts, and overall, I enjoyed it. Then, something unexpected and almost magical happened, when the movie ended and started the iconic first notes of BB King's song, some tears betrayed my eyes. It's a movie with an unusually short length but the story is full of touching and funny moments exploring the fears and hopes that fill the hearts of twelve-year old boys, through a strange odyssey for a morbid quest -but understandably intriguing object of curiosity for kids- a corpse, whose sensational discovery would make them local celebrities in their small hometown of Castlerock. And the group that will conduct this adventure is composed of four kids on whom each of us can identify. I, personally, had the chance to identify with each of them in a certain way, but especially Gordie for his creativity and handicapping modesty that almost prevented him to believe in his talent. Gordie is the central character and perfectly embodies the doubts that makes the thrills of childhood so sincere, because despite them, we move, and friends play an important part, because we so want to be accepted that we follow them, and learn about courage, or simply learn.
More than a road movie, Stand By Me" defines the coming-of-age sub-genre. It's about learning from one experience, and at one very difficult age: twelve. Why, twelve? I guess it's because this age is a sort of life's crossroads where we're mature enough as children to understand that we're getting to tougher times, but child enough in our maturity to prefer friends to girls, to behave like kids, to sing, to play games and tell stories. In an interesting contrast, all the adults in the film have less appealing and more superficial activities, and behave like arrogant bores or cruel bullies. Sure, kids are no all victims, nor angels, even friends tease and fight each other, but they're still friends, and their actions are never badly intentioned. Friendship really means something at twelve, and builds the only strength to overcome the adult adversity.
And friendship couldn't have had a better homage thanks to the sincerity of the central relationship: Gordie Lachance, Will Wheaton, and Chris Chambers, River Phoenix, two underestimated kids for opposite reasons. Gordie lives in the shadow of his prematurely dead older brother, a popular and successful athlete with a promising life, and Chris is treated with defiance because his family is not recommendable and his brother Eyeball is a thug and the best friend of the town's biggest bully, Ace, played superbly by Kiefer Sutherland in one of his most memorable villainous roles. Both Gordie and Chris are treated with a poignant disdain that built their friendship with the cement of solidarity. Being underestimated is typical of childhood as it is typical for friendship to be made of weaknesses' similarities. Only a friend can understand you because he usually lives the same fears and injustices as you do and friendship creates this extra strength that makes childhood even more challenging, and exciting.
The two other friends Vern Tessio, Jerry O'Connell and Teddy Duchamp, Corey Feldman, act both as comic reliefs and incarnations of some other childhood's range of personalities, one is an adorably coward and naive kid, the other is funny but a bit wacko, we all had friends like that, we might have been one of them all in all, the dynamic created by the four protagonists creates a perfect balance between thrills and emotions. Future is evoked many times, and the revelation of each one's fate of us is sad because it rings true and Chris Chambers got my eyes ready to crack up, right when the ending credits song started.
This deserves a mention since even the actor who played Chris, River Phoenix, died leaving behind a life full of promises. It's ironically cruel. Chris, the one, who inspired the story, died for the same reasons and attitude that governed his acts as a kid. Adult times are indeed tougher and the rules of the games change, for the worst. The same death that took Gordie's brother, Ray Brower, Chris Chambers, and the real therefore, saddest one, River Phoenix. It's a movie about life being even more perceptible when we encounter death. And while facing the death of his best friend, the adult Gordie, Stephen King, and Rob Reiner made a time-capsule not just of the late fifties but of an age which talks to the hearts of the inner boy inside us, an age cinematically immortalized through "Stand By Me. And I didn't realize it until the film finished.
"Stand By Me" is a formidable adventure film, and a touching coming-of-age story revealing the preciousness of childhood and its ruthlessly ephemeral nature. To appreciate the film is to understand, when it's too late, that we won't be kids anymore, and that childhood was finally the most exciting adventure we ever lived.
